Nest Camera API Integration Security

As technology has grown to be such an integral part of our everyday lives, the security of our information and property has never been more important. Wink works closely with our partner brands to maintain our users’ security. We understand the importance of transparency in resolving such issues. If our users have any security concerns, we ask that they make an attempt at reasonable disclosure by immediately informing our team of their observations. You can find out more about Wink’s Security Researcher and Reporting Program on our page http://security.wink.com/.

On Wednesday, June 19th we received a report regarding our integration with Nest Cameras. A user appeared to have continued access to screenshots in the Wink app even after those cameras had been disconnected from the associated Nest account.

We immediately had our QA team work with several models of ‘Nest Cam’ and ‘Dropcam’ Wi-Fi cameras, as well as all other brands of supported Wi-Fi cameras, to determine if the issue could be reproduced. As our team was not able to reproduce the issue with any supported camera from any manufacturer, and the Wink/Nest integration relies exclusively on the Nest API, we also reached out to Nest and provided them with details of the incident.

As of 6/20/19 Nest had issued an update to all cameras in order to fix the issue. The patch requires no action from Nest or Wink users.

As always, the Wink support team is available to speak with users about any questions or concerns they may have. If you would like to speak with a representative, please reach out to our support center at 1-844-WINKAPP. Wink Lookout is the smart start to a secure home

Your home should feel secure whether you’re there or not. That’s why we've created Wink Lookout.

Lookout is our collection of smart security essentials, and a comprehensive way to know what’s happening at home for only $199. It includes a Wink Hub 2, two door/window sensors, a motion sensor, and a siren & chime.

This starter kit also includes a new in-app service called Lookout. It’s a free service that works with both the Wink Lookout kit and other Wink-compatible security products, such as additional sensors, garage doors, and cameras.

Use Lookout in the app to monitor what’s happening at home when you’re away and quickly take action if needed.

Lookout hardware

Meet our newest hardware, three Wink-branded security products:

  • Wink Door/Window Sensor (x2) - Discreetly keep track of your home’s windows and doors and receive alerts when they open or close.
  • Wink Motion Sensor - Easily mount or place around your home for motion alerts.
  • Wink Siren & Chime - If your sensors detect activity, sound the siren or chime and flash the built-in light to notify the household. It offers ten different sounds with adjustable volume and duration.

Lookout in-app service

Lookout’s in-app service helps you keep an eye on home activity when you’re away. Receive real-time alerts about doors, windows, locks, garage doors, motion, and more.

Lookout products use the latest wireless technology to securely communicate with your Wink Hub and send you alerts when activity is detected. Check sensor status in the Wink app when you're away and see recent alerts in the Lookout dashboard.

If you do receive an alert from Lookout, you have the option to sound your Wink siren, tap to call 911, or call a contact.

Using Lookout

Here are some of our favorite ways to use Lookout:

  • Get notified when the dog walker enters and exits your house, so you know exactly what time your pet was given attention.
  • Get alerts when there is unexpected motion in your home while you're away on vacation. Tap to call 911 if you are concerned about suspicious activity.
  • When you're at work, get notified when your kids come home from school and enter the house, and easily contact them to check in.

Our goal in creating Lookout is to give you an actionable, confident way to protect your home from anywhere. Setting up Lookout is as easy as unboxing and powering on your sensors. And it’s even easier to use.

Meet Wink’s Newest Compatible Security Cameras

Whether you’re on vacation, or want to make sure your furry friend hasn’t made a mess while you’re at work, a smart security camera is a perfect (and easy way) to have peace of mind about what’s happening at home. Today we’re excited to welcome two new industry-leading products to Wink’s growing ecosystem of compatible cameras: NETGEAR Arlo and Ring Stick Up Cam. If you’re not familiar, here’s a short primer on each:

NETGEAR Arlo

NETGEAR’s suite of Arlo cameras keep every angle of your home and business covered so you can know with confidence that someone has your back while you’re away. Add your Wink-compatible Arlo camera to an existing Robot to trigger actions in other smart products if motion or sound is detected. Wink currently supports three Arlo models:

  • Arlo: Wireless and weatherproof, Arlo provides HD quality video wherever you want a second pair of eyes.
  • Arlo Q: With AC-power, 1080p HD video, 2-way audio, and enhanced night vision, Arlo Q ups the ante in home security.
  • Arlo Q Plus: Designed for business applications, Arlo Q Plus delivers flexible power and connectivity options, including an Ethernet port for smoother reliability.

Ring Stick Up Cam

We’ve big fans of the Ring Video Doorbell and are thrilled to expand our compatibility with Ring’s product family by introducing the Ring Stick Up Cam to Wink. You can mount Stick Up Cam anywhere to see, hear, and speak with your visitors. Customize motion zones and sensitivity to activate Stick Up Cam and have alerts sent to the Wink app.

Creating a DIY Security System with Wink

One of the main benefits of having a smart home is that you can use it to amplify your home’s security in new and meaningful ways. It doesn’t require expensive, professional installation or the monthly fees common to many third party security providers. With a few products and a baseline knowledge of the different features available in the Wink app, you can quickly and easily create your very own DIY security system. In this post, we’ll outline a few common security use cases, along with the products and setup instructions to get started.

1: AUTOMATE LIGHTS SO IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE IS HOME AFTER DARK

If you’re someone who regularly works late (or has a very active after work social life), it’s likely you’re pulling into the driveway or walking into the apartment after it gets dark. With Wink, it’s easy to create the illusion that someone is always home.

Within the Wink app you can create Schedules that prompt single (or multiple) lights to turn on and off at predetermined times. You can also sync a Schedule with Sunset, so that regardless of changing daylight hours throughout the year, Wink will always turn on a porchlight or living room lamp at dusk.

What you’ll need:

  • One smart light bulb (or multiple, depending on the size of your home)
  • One Wink HUB (if required to connect your light bulb with the Wink app)

How to get started:

  • Check out our blog post on how to setup a Schedule for in-depth instructions here.

2: CONTROL WHO IS ENTERING AND LEAVING YOUR HOME

Our homes can be a zoo of activity with people constantly coming and going. While you can hand out keys to friends and family, a few smart products and the Wink app can make it much easier to not only see from afar who is at the front door, but when they’ve arrived and left.

The Ring Video Doorbell and a smart Schlage lock (multiple models available) enables this. Within the Wink app, you can create a Robot that notifies you whenever Ring is triggered or when motion is detected (the sensitivity of the motion detector can be changed based on environmental factors near your front door). From there, you can see who is at the front door and if you have a Schlage lock installed, either unlock the door remotely to let the dog sitter, or ignore the pesky salesman and go back to your day.

What’s more, with a Schlage lock you can create separate user codes for the individuals you want to grant access to your home. Once the codes are established, Robots can be created to notify you when a particular user code is used. The activity feed of the Wink app will show you who and when someone comes or goes, so you can breathe easier.

What you’ll need:

How to get started:

  • Create a Robot to send you an email and push notifications when Ring is triggered or detects motion. For step by step instructions on setting up a Robot, check out our blog post here
  • Create another Robot for when your Dog Sitter’s user code is entered.

3: SURPRISE AND WARD OFF Possible INTRUDERS

In the unlikely and unfortunate instance that someone enters your home that you don’t want there, automating a few sensors and smart lights might just surprise them into running away.

GoControl’s security suite comes with door and window sensors you can affix anywhere, and monitor their status accordingly through the Wink app. The motion sensor identifies movement up to 50 feet away, while the loud siren and flashing light warns intruders if the alarm is tripped.

Say you’re going on vacation for a few weeks. Within the Wink app, you can set up a Robot that triggers your smart light bulbs to automatically illuminate if the motion sensor detects movement or the front door sensor is triggered. Take it the extra mile by having the siren go off as well. You’ll get alerts automatically on your phone so you can jump into action and investigate.

What you’ll need:

How to get started:

  • Create a Robot for when a door opens, turn on the lights and trigger the siren.
  • Create one Shortcut that enables the Robot and one that Disables the Robot. You can find step by step instructions for using Robots and Shortcuts together here
  • Create a Widget for each Shortcut. Instructions for creating a widget can be found on the bottom of the Shortcut blog post here

Wink now works with Canary

Today, we're thrilled to share that Canary has teamed up with us for their first ever third party integration!

With Wink, you’ll be able to connect Canary with hundreds of Wink-compatible products from trusted home brands for more ways to enhance your home's security. Canary will be compatible with the Wink platform as part of our next app update for iOS and Android users.

If you’re not familiar, Canary is an all-encompassing security system packed into a single device that you can control from your phone. If Canary senses anything out of the ordinary, you’ll automatically receive a notification with a recorded HD video of the event. Its algorithm-based motion detection learns over time to send you smarter notifications, so the longer you have it, the more effective it becomes. Canary even monitors air quality, temperature, and humidity!

Here are a few ways you can put Wink + Canary into action:

  • Create a Robot in Wink so that every time Canary is armed, your front door automatically locks and the hallway lights turn off. Perfect for those mornings when you're rushing out the door for work.
  • On the flip side, give the illusion that you’re home by setting up a Robot in Wink so that if Canary is armed, the lights in your front windows turn on.
  • Disarm Canary when you walk through the front door at night to trigger your home to come to life. Without you having to think about it, your thermostat will start to crank up the heat, the lights in the living room will dim, and the blinds will raise, all through Wink.

Wink and Canary share a complementary vision for home security and this partnership will further our efforts to deliver a more holistic, interconnected, yet simple solution for users. We’re excited to team up and look forward to adding new ways to keep your home secure and connected down the road!
